>Pakistan’s suspicious matches

>

Pakistan v Australia ODI at Colombo on September 7, 1994:

Australia, playing their first match after a long gap of five months, were precariously placed at 49 for four at one stage after being sent into bat. They recovered and eventually made 179 for seven off their allotted 50 overs.

Chasing a rather easy target, Pakistan were well on course as two star batsmen Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq were associated in 75-run stand for the second wicket.

At this stage things beginning to happen as Inzamam was stumped and Saeed Anwar was forced to retire with hamstring injury. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals with the Man of the Match Shane Warne and Steve Waugh doing most of the damage with three wickets each.

From winning position, Pakistan were restricted to 151 for nine in their stipulated 50 overs and lost the game by 28 runs in the end.

Pakistan v Ireland ODI at Kingston on March 17, 2007:

Ireland won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Pakistan into bat on green hard pitch. From the onset, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and only late revival by Kamran Akmal (27) and handsome contributions by extras (29) took the score to 132 off 45.4 overs.

Mohammad Sami’s pace did early damage to Ireland’s innings, but Niall O’Brien’s masterly innings of 72 held the innings together as he guided his team to three-wicket triumph and himself to coveted Man of the Match award.

Pakistan crashed out of the World Cup at the earliest possible moment. But their shocking defeat eclipsed hours later by the saddest news of all: the death of Pakistan’s coach Bob Woolmer.

Pakistan v Australia Test at Sydney on January 3-6, 2010:

Australia, electing to bat first, were bowled out for 127 in their first innings well inside four hours with Mohammad Asif being chief destroyer of the innings with figures of six for 41.

Pakistan consolidated their grip on the match with a sizeable lead of 206 runs. In their second essay, Australia were 257 for eight – a lead of just 51 runs with two wickets in hand.

At this juncture, the turn-around begun to take place as Kamran Akmal messed up five chances including a run-out. Man of the Match Michael Hussey (134 not out) and Peter Siddle took full advantage of the situation as they took the score to 381.

Chasing 176-run target, Pakistan were dramatically bowled out for 139 and handed over 36-run victory to Australia inside four days.

Pakistan v Sri Lanka ODI at Dambulla on June 15, 2010:

This was the very opening match of the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka after choosing to bat first, made a respectable score of 242 for nine off their stipulated 50 overs. Shoaib Akhtar appearing after a long gap of more than twelve months, was the most successful bowler with a haul of three for 41off his 10 overs.

In reply, Pakistan were in the doldrums with score-line reading 32 for four in 13.2 overs. Then skipper Shahid Afridi played a gem of an innings of 109 runs off just 76 deliveries which contained 8 fours and 7 sixes.

His innings almost brought Pakistan to the jaws of victory only to miss the opportunity in the end to lose the game by 16 runs. He was however named Man of the Match for his swashbuckling knock.

Pakistan v England Test at Lord’s on August 26-29, 2010:

This was yet another case of Pakistan conceding advantageous situation and eventually losing the game with a day to spare.

After putting England into bat, Pakistan had the home team on the mat as they were tottering at 102 for seven off 38.4 overs. Some dropped catches helped England to make marked recovery as Jonathan Trott (184) and Stuart Broad (169) added a world record 332 runs for the eighth wicket. England went on to make 446.

The shocking news was the innings was marred by series of pre-determined no-balls from two Mohammads – Amir and Asif.

In reply, Pakistan were bundled out for 74 & 147; and suffered innings defeat. The allegations of spot-fixing were raised with match still in progress.
