Royals can cope with Jadeja’s absence: Warne
Read Original StoryRoyals can cope with Jadeja’s absence: Warne

Rajasthan Royals would miss key performer Ravindra Jadeja in third edition of the Indian Premier League, but the team has enough resources to lift the title, according to skipper Shane Warne.

“Jadeja had performed very well in the first edition and even for the country he was doing well. Yes, he will be missed but we have others like Abhishek Jhunjhunwala who can stand up and perform,” Warne said.

Jadeja’s hope of playing in the event went up in smoke after the IPL governing council turned down his appeal against a one-year ban, which was imposed for negotiating a contract without informing his side.

The Australian spin legend said they would start the season as underdogs and that would work to their advantage.

“Nobody gave us chance in the first IPL and despite that we emerged the champions. This time too, we are having the same feeling and the team has a bunch of youngsters who can help us win the title once again,” the leg-spinner added.

Sounding a warning to all other teams, Warne said they are ready to surprise rivals with their own brand of game.

“After two years of competition the teams are predictable but there is always an element of surprise. We did it in IPL-I and that was our brand of cricket.

TV channels to ride on IPL fever, offer special programmes
Read Original StoryTV channels to ride on IPL fever, offer special programmes

Not wanting to be left out during the cricket crazy weeks ahead, TV channels are gearing up to dish out special programmes to keep viewer’s interested during IPL 3.

This time around, for the third season of IPL which will be played from March 12 to 25, channels are set to pull together eyeballs in their favour by cashing on the IPL fever and lending a complementary hand to it.

As part of its offering, English movie channel HBO will have a ‘Hollywood Premier League’ showcasing a range of blockbuster films during the IPL season.

It has incorporated various cricketing elements like ‘HPL Scoreboard’ and movie trivia in the form of ‘HPL Googly’.

“It is the time of IPL and everybody is geared up for it. We want to be with it’s spirit as it would be foolish to compete with it. So, we came up with ‘Hollywood Premier League’ and the movies will be showcased after the matches get over,” Shruti Bajpai, Country Manager, HBO Asia told PTI.

Entertainment channels who suffer the most with IPL taking away their share on prime-time slot viewership too are looking to ride on the IPL wave this year.

“‘IPL Rockstar’ not only promises to raise the bar in the mere conception of live entertainment for television, but also embark the first ever alliance between mainstream television programming and international sporting events,” said Programming Head of COLORS, Ashvini Yardi.

The show to be judged by Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher and hosted by rapper Hard Kaur will also see IPL franchisee owners Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty gracing the jury panel to attract viewers.

“It is going to move from the studio to the cricketing grounds in midst of real action. The audience will witness a unique marriage of our nation’s biggest passions, cricket and music with this differentiated programming initiative,” Yardi added.

But not everybody is weaving threads around IPL to raise TRP’s.

“We are not doing anything around IPL as it does not affects general entertainment channels. It’s just 5-7 percent on certain slots and 15 to 20 percent on other slots,” said Shailja Kejrival, Executive Vice President (Content) of Imagine.

Kejrival feels that despite a large chunk of audience tilting in favour of IPL there is a good amount of loyal viewers.

“There is a huge audience that still remains with us. We will try to make our existing content more interesting,” she added.

>Cricket News – Sehwag can surpass Sachin’s double ton: Ravi Bopara

>Sachin Tendulkar’s historic ODI double hundred is a feat that only Virender Sehwag can match or surpass among the current crop of batsmen, feels England’s Ravi Bopara, who doesn’t foresee it happening anywhere outside India.

Bopara, who plays for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League, feels Tendulkar has nothing more to achieve in his illustrious career after becoming the first batsman in the history of cricket to notch up an ODI double ton.

“Sachin, by scoring the double century, has completed himself and achieved everything. As a batsman he is complete. He has all what a batsman wants from the three formats of the game. He has got so many 100s and 50s in Test and ODI cricket. He is a great, great player,” Bopara said.

“To be very frank, you don’t expect anyone to score a double hundred in ODI game. It’s historic and unbelievable. To maintain that rate of acceleration and to bat that long is difficult,” said Bopara.

The right-hander, who was bought for USD 450,000 at the 2009 auction, said Tendulkar’s opening partner Sehwag is the only batsman with a realistic chance of breaking the record, given the aggressive way he scores.

“Sehwag is promisingly the number one candidate. The way he scores definitely makes him the possible contender. He has got the chance. He comes as a opener and plays aggressively,” Bopara said.

He also feels that if the record is ever broken, it would be in India.

“I imagine that would be in India. I think the wickets suit such kind of batting and batsmen can go for it. You can be aggressive in your style. Sometimes, you can see people scoring 50 runs in just six overs. I think it will happen here only but when, don’t know. Probably 10 years from now,” he said.

The 24-year-old batsman, who had delayed his arrival in India after going through security advisor Reg Dickason’s report, said he never had any problems in playing in IPL and he was actually misquoted by a section of the media.

“I did not have concerns regarding coming to India for IPL in the first place. I was actually misquoted. Security around the team, stadium, and hotel is really good with police personnel and metal detectors.

“Even I did not make any contact with the franchise or anybody regarding security while I was in England. I don’t feel any danger at all here,” Bopara said.

The Essex player was practicing hard under the watchful eyes of coaches and support staff to get his act together before the first match on March 13 against Delhi Daredevils on home ground and vowed to entertain the crowd to maximum with some fiery batting.

“All I am going to do is play my natural game. I am not going to change my playing style. My job from opening is to go out and put some runs on the board. Get the good start, follow that start and then push on for the final assault.

“Obviously fans are expecting some good show by the team. They have paid good money to come on to the ground and I promise to entertain them as much as possible. We all training hard and working on off days. We want to win this event.”

Bopara said Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders would be among those doing well at the IPL this year as they have a good mix of foreign and Indian players.

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar said he was still receiving congratulatory messages for becoming first batsman in the history of One-day cricket to score a double hundred and he was enjoying the good time.

“It has taken many years for a batsman to get a double-hundred (in ODIs). I am still getting great feedback. It feels terrific,” he said on the sidelines of a function here.

Asked when his fans would get to see a triple century from him in Test cricket, the master blaster said, “whenever it comes. It will be never late, I don’t make big statements.”

“I wanted to play cricket whole-heartedly for the country. I am living my dream and have played with two-three generations. I wanted to be a special member of the team and I have done it,” he added.

>"IPL will not run beyond seven weeks" says IPL chairman Lalit Modi

>

“IPL will not run beyond seven weeks”

The IPL will not run beyond seven weeks as extending it would “hurt other forms of cricket”, says IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

“We are going to have the current limitation (in the IPL’s duration), and we are happy to live with that. Then (if we make it a longer tournament) you are going to starting to hurt the other forms of the game,” Modi said.

“We chose the window specifically to be off-season in India, April-May are typically off season in India … I don’t think we are going to be able to change that,” he added.

The IPL will have 94 matches in the 2011 season but Modi said the tournament will only be 51 days long.

“It’s (next season) only over seven weeks instead of six, it’s over 51 days instead of 46, we have done the scheduling, we just have to announce it.”

Modi reiterated that Test cricket remains a priority for the BCCI.

“Test cricket is our bread and butter which people don’t understand, we are never going to compromise on Test cricket,” he told ‘Cricinfo’.

“When I talked about, you know, (how) we have to do something about Test cricket, it’s in the other countries that Test cricket is going down. In India, our ratings are going up, we have been tracking that year by year, in fact, we get paid highest for Test cricket,” Modi said.
